Hours of Operation: Season is from April through October. Reservations required.
Fees: $12 per student with a guarantee of 55 students per trip or $660. Teachers are free. Rods and bait included in the price on all trips. Call to confirm current prices.
Mission: To provide hands-on educational experiences onboard a 68-foot Coast Guard-approved educational vessel.
Target Audience: Primarily fifth and sixth grade students, and occasionally junior and senior high school students.
Facility Description: Educational vessel can accommodate between up to 100 passengers. Large cabin for indoor study and additional learning tools. Two rest rooms.
Facilities for People with Special Needs: Wheel chair accessible.
Types of Programs and Resources Offered: Four-hour program conducted by a marine biologist. Crew uses scallop dredge, plankton net, and other equipment to study and identify collected organisms. Boat trips along Fire Island Inlet and Great South Bay. Oceanographic material is sent to the teacher prior to the trip.
Topics Addressed: All specimens that are brought up are identified and discussed. Stereoscopes in the cabin are used to identify Plankton. Students also visit the Wheel House to see navigational equipment and operation.
