Mission: To provide research-generated information and educational programs to Nassau County residents.
Target Audience: Youth, teachers, educators, horticultural professionals, volunteers, agency representatives, parents, limited-resource groups and the general public in Nassau County. However, Long Island residents and other New Yorkers may participate in educational programs, e.g. summer camp programs.
Facility Description: The Plainview gardens are open during daylight hours. Maps and information are available for self-guided tours of yearly selections for the "All American Trial Garden." Different types of composting containers are on view, plus an exhibit on xeriscape landscaping.
Facilities for People with Special Needs: Access ramp into building and an elevator in Plainview office.
Types of Programs and Resources Offered: Fact sheets, newsletters, educational programs for the public, educational programs for school groups, in-school programs, teacher training, hotlines, summer camp, demonstration gardens, and horticultural information center.
Topics Addressed: Composting, gardening problems, and drought-tolerant
turf grass, herbs and Integrated Pest Management.
