AROUND THE ESTUARY

Estuary Appropriation secured by Congressman Israel

Long Island Congressman Steve Israel secured an appropriation in the 2003-04 federal budget for SSER stormwater infrastructure improvements. The appropriation is expected to be used to control non-point source pollution in high priority areas of the estuary identified by the SSER Comprehensive Management Plan such as the Great South Bay subregion. "Long Islanders depend on clean water in the estuary for commercial and recreational fishing and for its long-term conservation. I am fighting to make the federal government a partner in this effort to tackle the top source of water pollution in the estuary" said Congressman Israel.

USGS

A newly completed report by the United States Geological Survey titled Trends in Nitrogen Concentration and Nitrogen Loads Entering the South Shore Estuary Reserve from Streams and Ground-Water Discharge in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Long Island, New York, 1952-97 is available at http://ny.usgs.gov/pubs/wri/wri024255/.

SSER Outreach

Look for the new SSER educational display this summer and fall at maritime related events throughout the estuary. The display focuses on estuary partnerships and recommends actions for citizen involvement in the implementation of the CMP.

Student Conservation Association

The New York State Department of State has partnered with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) to place an intern in the South Shore Estuary Reserve Office for 10 months. Under the Office's direction, the intern will be helping to implement certain recommended actions in the comprehensive management plan which also implement an AmeriCorps Homeland Security initiative. Specifically, the work will include developing a bayside erosion monitoring program, identifying problematic storm-related flooding areas, developing a conservation education lesson plan for school aged children, and working to improve local disaster preparedness.

Artistry in the Estuary

Hans Gabali is famous for creating murals on the sides of buildings. The murals often depict local nautical themes. Gabali's artistry can be enjoyed through out the South Shore Estuary Reserve Maritime Centers. Look for a Gabali mural in a neighborhood near you!
